Year 7 to Year 10

English and Mathematics Tuition: Years 7 to 10 (Stages 4 & 5)

As students move into secondary school, their needs become more diverse. At ARRENDELL, we continue to offer small group sessions and individual sessions to cater for this diversity.

Our secondary school teachers are highly trained to identify the strengths and weaknesses and learning gaps of each student, and work with the student to develop tailored made learning cycles.

We also work with students to prepare them for any future assessments and assignments, and to review past assessments.

All students are encouraged to be an active participant in their learning, and as such, help set the goals they wish to achieve.

English Tuition

During our English sessions, students in secondary school are encouraged to:

  • respond to, and compose texts for understanding, interpretation, critical analysis, imaginative expression and pleasure

  • apply increasing knowledge of vocabulary, text structure and language features to understand the content of texts

  • recognise that vocabulary choices contribute to the specificity, abstraction and style of texts

  • analyse how the text structures and language features of persuasive texts, including media texts, vary according to the medium and mode of communication

  • understand and explain how the text structures and language features of texts become more complex in informative and persuasive texts, and identify underlying structures such as taxonomies, cause and effect, and extended metaphors

  • use increasingly sophisticated verbal, aural, visual and/or written techniques, eg imagery, figures of speech, selective choice of vocabulary, rhythm, sound effects, colour and design to compose texts

  • recognise when information is presented objectively and subjectively, by examining the language of opinion, including modality, bias, personal and other semantic cues

  • identify and evaluate devices that create tone, for example humour, wordplay, innuendo and parody in poetry, humorous prose, drama or visual texts

Mathematic Tuition

During mathematic sessions, our tutors use a variety of teaching strategies to develop the student’s ability to:

  • extend the basic mathematical concepts covered in earlier stages of the learning continuum

  • use deductive reasoning in problem solving and in presenting arguments and formal proofs

  • interpret and apply formal definitions and generalisations, and connect and apply mathematical ideas within and across sub-strands

  • demonstrate fluency in selecting, combining and applying relevant knowledge, skills and understanding in the solution of familiar and unfamiliar problems

  • operate with irrational numbers, and extend their knowledge of the number system to include all real numbers

  • analyse and describe physical phenomena and rates of change

  • solve problems involving the surface areas and volumes of pyramids, cones and spheres, and related composite solids

  • explore similarity relationships for area and volume

  • determine exact trigonometric ratios for 30°, 45° and 60°, extend trigonometric ratios to obtuse angles, and sketch sine and cosine curves for angular values from 0° to 360°

  • apply the sine and cosine rules for finding unknown angles and/or sides in non-right-angled triangles. Use Pythagoras' theorem and trigonometry to solve problems in three dimensions

  • utilise their knowledge of a wide range of geometrical facts and relationships to prove general properties in geometry, extending the concepts of similarity and congruence to more generalised applications

  • prove known properties of triangles, quadrilaterals and circles

  • investigate statistical reports, and explore how data is used to inform decision-making processes

Individual Tuition for English or Mathematics

At times, a student may need specific assistance or extension that cannot be addressed appropriately in our small group settings. We are able to address this situation by providing individual tuition for students as required.
