In recognition of the needs of gifted students who are already performing well above average, the NSW Department of Education has established Opportunity Classes for Years 5 and 6 in a variety of public schools across the state. Opportunity classes are for students who are high achievers in the public school system.

It is well recognised, that students who are academically gifted and/or talented, need rigorous, relevant and engaging learning opportunities aligned with their individual learning needs, strengths, interests and goals to reach their full potential. Furthermore, gifted and talented students benefit immensely from working with like-minded peers.

In the Newcastle, Maitland and Hunter Valley area, there are six primary schools with opportunity classes. Cessnock West, Jewells, Maryland, New Lambton South, Rutherford and Tighes Hill. Offers for opportunity class placement are made on the basis of the opportunity class placement tests conducted every July when prospective students are in Year 4. School assessments, and other evidence of academic merit are also part of the selection process, so it is vital that a student does well while in Years 3 and 4.

There are two parts to the test, with each part consisting of a mix of multiple-choice questions in English, mathematics and general ability. Computer-marked answer sheets are utilised. 

 

Whilst it is most beneficial for students to perform well in Years 3 and 4, it is equally as important for a child preparing to participate in the Opportunity Class tests to be exam ready.

At ARRENDELL Education, we offer Opportunity Class preparation tutorial sessions to ensure your child is fully aware of the structure of the tests, and has help developing the academic skills that will be tested. At the commencement of Term One, we run special groups that focus on Opportunity Class techniques. The one hour OC Preparation sessions are run in conjunction to the normal tutorial sessions.
